Elise Ashby is a visual artist working in contemporary drawing and printmaking. Her work is interested in the construction of ‘environment’ in both urban and natural spaces, and ideas of ecology, anthropocentrism, evolution & habitation.
Her work is strongly inspired by philosophy, having originally studied this, and in particular the school of Phenomenology. Phenomenologists acknowledge the sensory body as the starting point of consciousness and thought, and the basis of how we meet and process our environment. This speaks to the practise of drawing, which unites body, mind and environment, and encourages deeper looking and engagement. Rather than taking a static distanced approach, she aims to draw as a body, with a roaming eye, peripheral vision, and a full set of senses.
